Ungweru Organization organized an interface meeting between the duty bearers and the citizens which took place at Doroba Primary School in the area of Senior Chief Mtwalo in Mzimba district on 25th May 2017. The meeting was organized to provide a platform for community members through local education structures so that they can effectively engage with duty bearers to improve education standards in the area. The interface meeting was conducted under the theme: ‘Together We Can Improve Education Standards.’ The District Education Manager for Mzuzu City, Mr. Amos Chavula, and Senior Chief Mtwalo were some of key figures at the function.

Community members in the area specifically identified three critical challenges as impediments towards achieving quality education standards in the area. Absence of Special Needs Teachers, poor sanitation facilities and insufficient teachers topped the list of factors affecting quality delivery of education services in the area.

The meeting was a great success as it managed to provide an opportunity for engagement between duty bearers and right holders. ‘I am satisfied with the outcome of this meeting. The assurance by the District Education Manager that teachers will be deployed to our schools and  the commitment made by a Retired Commissioner to drill a borehole at Doroba Primary School to improve sanitation are both fruits of this meeting, narrates Inkosana Kamnkhoti Mkandawire.

Ungweru Organization is a running an Education Governance Project in the area with support from Tilitonse Fund. The goal of the project is to ensure that education service providers are accountable and responsive to the education needs of children and excluded groups in Inkosana Kamnkhoti Mkandawire).
